U.S. Mission Pakistan is seeking applications from qualified individuals for Translator (Interpreter) position in U.S. Embassy, Islamabad.

Basic Function of the Position – The incumbent serves as the sole official simultaneous and consecutive Interpreter/Translator in two languages (Urdu and English) for Management section. Will provide support to the Chief of Mission, DCM, high level visiting U.S. Officials, delegations and other Embassy sections and agencies as assigned. Provides cultural advice on communication within the Mission and with local counterparts. Reviews written material for appropriateness of the cultural content before dissemination. Provide professional-level translations of official documents, official speeches, and press releases. Provides translations of official USG documents and reports, diplomatic notes, demarches, and other materials as required. Often these documents - and the topics addressed during meetings are sensitive and not intended for release to the public, requiring a high degree of discretion and safe handling on the part of the incumbent.

Qualification Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated Urdu to English and vice versa consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as well as translation in government, international organizations, business or academic setting is required.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (16 years of education) in Translation Studies, Interpretation Studies, relevant linguistic discipline, English literature, Modern languages, political science, or Business Studies is required.

Job Knowledge: The incumbent should have a broad knowledge of a wide range of specialized technical contexts to participate in any conversation, meeting or conference with fluency and precision. Should be well versed in cultural sensitivities and differences between Western and Asian cultural norms.

LANGUAGE: Level V (Professional Translator/Interpreter) Speaking/Reading/Writing in English and Urdu is required. Language skills may be tested.

Skills And Abilities: Must have good technical writing skills (Grammar, content and style in English and Urdu.) Must possess technical skills required for successful completion of tasks, such as simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpretation as well as fully understand and be able to apply translation techniques correctly and quickly while translating. Ability to make public speeches (good dictation, clear articulation etc.) and stay calm under pressure. Excellent interpersonal skills, social and cultural sensitivity, sound judgment and capability of working with others in a sensitive environment. Sound computer skills and proficient in use of language software’s is also required.
