General Position Summary

The incumbent will be responsible for the overall management of the Xpert testing site in the designated hospital or lab in the assigned district in accordance with the PPM Operational Guidelines

Essential Job Responsibilities

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator, the Xpert testing In-charge for the Gene Xpert network will be responsible for undertaking the following activities:

  • Test clinical specimens of patients referred for diagnosis of tuberculosis, using a Gene Xpert machine.
  • Timely reporting of results as per recommendation and maintaining the record of all tests on standard recording tool/ electronically
  • Report Rifampicin-resistant cases with immediate effect and by the fastest mean possible to referring health facility, linked PMDT sites, and MDR focal person.
  • Coordinate closely with referring health facility linked PMDT site and District TB control officer to ensure that all diagnosed cases are enrolled in treatment.
  • Prepare and submit weekly /monthly performance reports of gene Xpert in a standard format.
  • Maintain GeneXpert equipment and perform the calibration as per users’ manual/ instruction provided
  • Report immediately in case of errors/Technical issues in the Xpert machine to the ACF Coordinator and follow instructions for troubleshooting.
  • Give clear instructions to patients for obtaining good quality sputum.
  • Coordinate with Riders regarding sputum transportation and provision of results against these sputum samples.
  • Maintain the status of cartridges and timely generate demand for cartridges.
  • Maintain recording and reporting tools of the Xpert site.
  • Ensure uninterrupted provision of services and supplies.
  • Any other task assigned by the supervisor/ superiors.

·       Actively learns about safeguarding and integrates it into their work, including safeguarding risks and mitigations related to their area of work

·       Practices the values of Mercy Corps including respecting the dignity and well-being of participants and fellow team members

·       Encourages openness and communication in their team; encourages team members to submit reports if they have any concerns using reporting mechanisms e.g., Integrity Hotline and other option

Reports Directly To: Regional Coordinator

     Works Directly With: In close coordination with the Regional Coordinator, DFS, TBS, and other stakeholders.

Knowledge and Experience

  • The candidate must have a BSC in medical laboratory technology from a recognized institute. Additional qualifications such as a Diploma or Certification in IT/computer skills will be an added advantage.
  • Candidates with FSC in medical laboratory technology will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s Degree, provided they meet the desired experience, competencies, and skills.     
  • The candidate must have basic knowledge and experience of working in a clinical /microbiology laboratory, and at least one year of experience working in a clinical /microbiology laboratory. Basic knowledge and computer skills will be preferred. Experience working in a TB laboratory will be an asset. Knowledge about biosafety in TB laboratories is desired.
