Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as Senior Researcher Officer – Hydrologist.

The general scope of work required from the Hydrologist will be carrying out hydrological studies for monitoring, management and protection of water and water resources in different hydrological and environmental settings for Balochistan. The incumbent will develop, calibrate, and validate the model, including sensitivity analysis and documentation of the various modeling application at different spatial scales. She/he will contribute to the research activities, including literature reviews, field data collection, analytical work, policy analysis, and coordination with stakeholders and project partners in the water and climate sectors. She/he will also organize project-related events, workshops, training, and field work involving various stakeholders.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in collecting the hydrological and hydrogeological variables from the national and international data archives.
  • Work with specifically designed computer modelling packages to assess the most effective methods of managing available water in a river basin.
  • Process meteorological, snow, and hydrologic data to analyse the changes in water flows brought up by changes in land use, environmental factors and crop irrigation.
  • Pre-process the primary data in the different image processing software to calculate and audit water resources system.
  • Assist in parameterizing the hydrological models to allow the development of flood forecasting and drought management strategy.
  • Assist in calibrating and validating various hydrological model for different land use and climate change scenarios.
  • Analysing the collected datasets for computing the changes in water storage on different Spatio-temporal bases.
  • Estimate water yields, taking into account the utilization of water in a specific natural drainage area.
  • Assess the relationship between rainfall, run off, soil and plants to map the systematic changes in water demand and supply considering the climate shifts for catchment to basin scale.
  • Assist in determining the amount of water that can be allocated for domestic, agricultural, industrial and environmental purposes to sustain the ecosystem.
  • Assist in organizing different stakeholder meetings and disseminating the results at different levels.
  • Be part of the research team during fieldwork, participating in interdisciplinary research activities, including data collection, processing, and analysis, in the thematic issues such as policy, institutions, water governance and water management.
  • Contribute to building positive relationships with the government, civil society and other stakeholders.
  • Provide support to organizing meetings, dialogues and workshops for the project.
  • Assist in preparing high quality project reports according to project timelines.
  • Provide support to preparing project-specific communication materials.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum MSc degree in in hydrology, meteorology, hydrometeorology, environmental sciences, environmental studies or closely related fields.
  • Good scientific publication records in well reputed international journals.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience of working in developing hydrological models and relevant experience in water management such as conducting the water accounting in Indus or similar basin.
  • Considerable depth of scientific knowledge and specialized expertise in water resources management working with the rural farming communities across Balochistan.
  • Complementary knowledge of hydrology aspects of rural livelihoods in watershed systems acquired through formal training and/or work experience across Balochistan.
  • Good command in using the large spatial data sets.
  • Experience designing and implementing approaches for data scarce environments.
  • Must have a strong analytical mindset.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills and the ability to process large temporal and spatial datasets in a python environment.
  • Ability to use advanced spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems tools and hydrological modelling approaches for multiple scale assessments.
  • Independent and critical scientific thought including a sound understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of spatial tools for water resource assessments at different scales.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.

  • Effective listening skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Good command of Urdu
  • Good understanding of local languages (Balochi, Pashto, and Brahvi)

This is a nationally recruited position and only Pakistani nationals are eligible to apply. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The duration of the contract will be for a three-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funds.
