Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join IWMI as the National Researcher – Applied Adaptive Agriculture Specialist.

The National Researcher – Applied Adaptive Agriculture Specialist is responsible for performing technical studies to improve water use efficiency and productivity of various cropping systems and high value crops in the various donor funded water resources projects for the IWMI Pakistan portfolio. The National Researcher – Applied Adaptive Agriculture Specialist will work with the rural farming communities and water user associations in supporting the field studies in agro-ecological livestock and agriculture production completed to design alternative farming systems proposals adapted to the different ecosystems and socioeconomic situations in Balochistan. The Applied Adaptive Researcher will be responsible to conduct field trials for new irrigation, agriculture and rangelands related technologies and demonstration of the already tested technologies at farmers' fields, research farms of government departments and universities. He will also be responsible to conduct farmers' schools, field days, training, and workshops for the dissemination of the tested technologies.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To conduct a baseline study in different agroecological zones to assess the current socioeconomic conditions, current resource base, farming systems, irrigation practices, livestock, and rangelands management practices of the rangeland livestock and farming communities and identify their constraints.
  • To conduct qualitative research using thematic analysis to explore how participatory farm research help farmers address and deal with changes to their on-farm practices in the selected watersheds
  • To help in the capacity assessment of educational and research institutions in Balochistan in the field of water management, livestock, agriculture, and forestry.
  • To contribute to conducting stakeholder workshops and preparation of the report (including proposed changes to the curricula)
  • To establish shared cooperation with farmers and experts of the research institutes and universities to prioritize research topics, research designs, methodology, and location for research trials to be conducted in the selected watersheds.
  • To conduct adaptive research trials on the farm of different research institutions and farmers' fields both for Rabi & Kharif season crops, vegetables and fruits to pick the best out of already recommended choices (crop variety or any recommended practice) in different agro-ecological conditions for alternate agricultural farming systems.
  • To help in the production/multiplication of different improved and tested seeds of field crops and vegetables.
  • To conduct demonstration plots for the dissemination of the latest proven production technologies
  • To help in the production/ multiplication and supply of low delta high value nursery fruit plants.
  • Training the farming and rangelands community along with agriculture workers and herders to ensure stress-free adaption of improved agricultural production practices
  • Conduct formal training, farmer field days, as well as field schools to sensitize and educate the herders, farmers, and other community members about the importance of the alternative sustainable rangeland and farming system practices designed and tested.
  • Monthly, quarterly, annual, and completion reports of the project
  • Assist in training and capacity building activities.
  • Perform other related assignments as required
  • Assist in producing technical reports and journal articles.
  • Frequent travel is expected for this position between Quetta and the activity site in Balochistan with more than 1-week stay at the project site per month.

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A PhD degree with 5 years of experience or a Master’s degree with ten years of experience in Agriculture sciences or a similar closely related subject; experience with natural resources management or agriculture is preferred.
  • 5-10 years experience in applied research in conducting agronomic and irrigation practices related trials on different crops in the various agroecological zones of Balochistan.
  • Expertise in conducting baseline surveys for identifying research gaps
  • Knowledge about the research governance system and research institutions of Balochistan
  • Local geographic knowledge of Balochistan province
  • Considerable depth of scientific knowledge and specialized expertise in rural farming communities across Balochistan.
  • Expertise in conducting scientific experiment design, and scientific/statistical data analysis
  • Evidence of publishing scientific papers/reports in research journals
  • Complementary knowledge of social aspects of rural livelihoods in farming/agricultural systems acquired through formal training and/or work experience across Balochistan.
  • Significant research profile, research leadership, and a commitment to a diverse and inclusive industrial environment.
  • The ability to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Excellent analytical, and time management skills.

This is a nationally recruited position and only Pakistani nationals are eligible to apply. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The duration of the contract will be for a three-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funds.
