Lady Health Visitor (LHV)

General Mission

The Lady Health visitor is responsible for provision of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Care to Afghan refugees living in refugee camps including antenatal, natal and postnatal care. As a part of health promotion, educate mothers in particular and other refugees in general on disease prevention and nutrition including Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) for care givers.

Mission/Responsibilities

Mission 1: MCH duties

  • Register all pregnant women in the camp and provide Antenatal care including provision of necessary micronutrients.
  • Giving support from early prenatal period to a child's early weeks and throughout their childhood - providing a gateway to other services as required.
  • Record and do follow-ups and report on all births reported in the community.
  • Provide child spacing counseling and services.
  • Do all documentations related to MCH care.
  • Conduct normal deliveries in LR and provide postnatal care to delivered mothers.
  •  Do home visits, identify high risk mothers and children, check environmental hygiene and educate mothers on hygiene, nutrition and healthy life style.
  • Maintaining and updating MCH records.
  • Collect data and report on MCH indicators (ANC, Safe deliveries PNC, TT status).
  •  Perform any other task assigned by Supervisors (Medical Officer).

Mission 2: Health promotion duties:

  • Advising and informing new parents on issues such as feeding, safety, physical and emotional development, weaning, immunization and other aspects of childcare.
  • Establish IYCF corner in MCH and conduct session on IYCF for care givers.
  • Establish ORT corner at MCH and educate mothers of ORS preparation and administration.
  • Plan and conduct health awareness sessions on priority health problems including COVID-19 and Dengue prevention and vaccination.
  • Identifying risk factors and signs of concern and working with organizations to protect and safeguard children, as well as making sure families receive support during safeguarding arrangements.
  • Providing emotional support regarding issues such as postnatal depression, bereavement, disability, family conflict and domestic violence.

Mission 3: Community Health

  1. Plan and participate in SHURA/CHC meetings, share health status data and discuss issues.
  2. Plan training program for TBAs and CHWs and provide continuous support to promote their role in health awareness and disease prevention model in refugees.
  3. Collect data on vital events (births, deaths, in and out migration) in refugees.
  4. Conduct awareness session on COVID-19 and Dengue HGF and other priority health problems.

Technical skills

  • The LHV must be capable of communicating with mothers in local language.
  •  Calculate EDD, and assess gestational age of mother including measurement of fundus height.
  • Assess pregnant mother for high risk factors in pregnancy and continuously monitor.
  • MCH documentation and reporting.
  • Plot and interpret partograph in LR.
  • Plot and interpret growth chart for child.
  • Do assess height and weight of mothers and continuously monitor progress.
