Brief Introduction of the Project:
Penny Appeal Pakistan is launching a pilot Groundwater Recharge System project focused on the rehabilitation of Dora (natural water channels) in District Sujawal, Sindh. The initiative builds on the gains of the previous SPHF intervention, ensuring continuity, sustainability, and enhanced climate resilience for the target communities.
The project aims to benefit approximately 7,000 individuals across 10 vulnerable villages. Through inclusive, participatory, and gender-responsive approaches, the project seeks to strengthen local adaptive capacities and promote community-led water resource management.
A key component of the intervention is the rehabilitation of natural Dora channels to enable groundwater recharge and reduce the impact of climate-induced water scarcity and flooding. Given Sujawal’s low-lying terrain, salinity issues, and declining groundwater levels, restoring these traditional water pathways offers a nature-based solution that enhances water retention, improves soil moisture, and supports sustainable livelihoods.
This pilot initiative will serve as a model for climate-resilient water management, demonstrating how ecosystem-based restoration can contribute to both disaster risk reduction (DRR) and long-term water security in vulnerable rural settings.
