About the role:

The Project Manager will lead the implementation of the "Waste to Value" project funded by NCA Pakistan. The project is designed to promote a circular economy and social entrepreneurship through innovative waste management practices. The position is expected to lead the technical aspect of the project, project planning, team coordination, stakeholder engagement, and monitoring project deliverables to ensure the effective transformation of plastic waste into valuable products, contributing to environmental sustainability and community livelihoods.

About the Project:

The "Waste for Value-Project" funded by NCA Pakistan aims to transform plastic waste management in the urban slums of Islamabad by establishing a social enterprise model that promotes waste segregation, recycling, and community engagement. The project focuses on converting single-use plastics into valuable products, thereby promoting a circular economy, enhancing community well-being, and addressing environmental challenges associated with improper waste disposal.

Objective # 1:

 

Technical Role

  • Lead the implementation of the Waste to Value project, ensuring alignment with national environmental strategies and donor requirements.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive project implementation strategy to establish social enterprises for waste management.
  • Oversee the installation and operationalization of waste processing prototypes, including hybrid solar recycling plants and plastic shredding machines.
  • Promote innovation in waste product development, such as plastic tiles and value-added products by women artisans.
  • Conduct needs assessments, feasibility studies, and baseline/end-line surveys to identify gaps and refine interventions.
  • Ensure the integration of cross-cutting themes such as gender inclusion, community participation, and health and safety standards.

Objective # 2:

 

Programme Management

  • Design and maintain project cycle management documents, including work plans, risk mitigation strategies, and progress tracking tools.
  • Monitor project activities to ensure timely achievement of milestones and adherence to quality standards.
  • Facilitate coordination with procurement teams for equipment and material acquisition, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
  • Resolve conflicts and adapt strategies to address challenges effectively.

Objective # 3:

 

Programme Financial Management

  • Prepare and monitor the project budget, ensuring compliance with organizational and donor financial policies.
  • Participate in monthly Budget vs. Actual (BvA) meetings and update budget forecasts.
  • Ensure proper utilization of seed grants allocated to social enterprise groups and women artisans.

Objective # 4:

 

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor project activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives and standards.
  • Establish real-time data collection mechanisms to track waste collection, processing, and product development metrics.
  • Document lessons learned, best practices, and challenges to inform future programming.
  • Organize learning workshops and debriefing sessions to share findings with stakeholders.

Objective # 5:

 

Coordination/Networking/

Partnership

  • Develop partnerships with local government bodies, private sector stakeholders, and community groups to enhance project impact.
  • Advocate for sustainable waste management practices at national and local forums.
  • Represent PMS in coordination meetings, such as environmental working groups and waste management clusters.
  • Ensure community engagement through awareness campaigns, training sessions, and participatory decision-making processes.

Objective # 6:

Team Management & Capacity building

  • Supervise and mentor project staff, ensuring their professional growth and effective project delivery.
  • Organize capacity-building workshops on topics such as entrepreneurship, waste segregation, health and safety, and machinery operation.
  • Promote a collaborative work environment that promotes teamwork and knowledge sharing.

What we are looking for: 

Education & Knowledge:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Project Management, or a related field.
  • Certifications in waste management, social entrepreneurship, or circular economy are highly desirable.

Work Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience in project management, particularly in environmental sustainability or waste management.
  • Proven track record of implementing innovative waste management or recycling initiatives.
  • Experience in community engagement, capacity building, and partnership development.

Functional Competencies/Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of waste management practices, circular economy models, and environmental conservation strategies.
  • Excellent project planning, budgeting, and risk management skills.
  • Proficiency in monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
  • Effective communication and report-writing skills in English and Urdu.
  • Ability to inspire and manage diverse teams.
