About Us:

The Legal Aid Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting vulnerable and disempowered individuals with efficient and effective legal services. One of our key programs is Women’s Rights and Privileges under Muslim Family Laws. An empirical research conducted by LAS under this program showed that 90.3% of nikahnamas in Sindh have clauses 16 to 22 struck out or left blank, curtailing women’s rights and privileges in marriage.

About the Research:

Under the scope of this program, we are currently working on a research piece that highlights women’s narratives about their experiences at the time of their nikah. There may be stories of violations of the terms of the marriage contract and also successes in negotiating the nikahnama. These stories will be used as advocacy components with key stakeholders, to present ground realities.

Responsibilities:

  • Translation and transcriptions of 14 in-depth interviews from Sindhi/Urdu to English

Benefits:

  • Gain valuable experience working with a reputable organization.
