Background: Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P) runs one of the largest not-for-profit private healthcare systems in the country, with a focus on the regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh. Its core focus includes initiatives for hard-to-reach populations through services like outreach clinics, training of community midwives to provide low-cost health services in remote areas, screening for non-communicable diseases, and digital health solutions.

Job Summary: The Aya is responsible for providing basic patient care support, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of wards and patient areas, assisting nursing staff in day-to-day ward operations, and supporting infection prevention measures. The role ensures comfort, safety, and dignity of patients in the hospital.

Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent Aya based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region. 

Key Responsibilities:

A. Patient Care Support

  • Assist patients with basic needs such as feeding, bathing, dressing, and mobility under supervision.
  • Support patients in using beds, wheelchairs, or stretchers safely.
  • Attend to patient comfort by providing water, cleaning linen, and keeping bedside environment neat.
  • Maintain respectful behavior and ensure patient privacy and dignity.

B. Ward Cleanliness and Hygiene

  • Clean patient beds, bedside tables, and surrounding areas regularly.
  • Sweep and mop floors and ensure tidy ward environment.
  • Clean and disinfect ward washrooms and handwashing areas.
  • Replace bed linens and towels as required.

C. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

  • Follow IPC protocols at all times while handling patients or ward items.
  • Assist in segregation and disposal of biomedical waste according to hospital SOPs.
  • Use PPE (gloves, apron, mask) as required.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and patient contact areas regularly.

D. Support to Nursing and Medical Staff

  • Assist nursing staff in patient admission and discharge processes.
  • Transport patients to OT, radiology, laboratory, or other departments when needed.
  • Assist in arranging beds, linen, and basic supplies for new admissions.
  • Support nurses during rounds and other ward activities as instructed.

E. Documentation and Reporting Support

  • Maintain basic records of ward linen, patient supplies, and cleaning activities if assigned.
  • Report damaged equipment, shortages, or safety hazards to ward in-charge.
  • Assist in maintaining attendance and duty registers if required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by ward in-charge or facility management.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Ability to communicate in Urdu preferred.
  • Minimum 1–2 years’ experience, experience in hospital ward or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience in hospital ward services is an advantage.
  • Basic training in patient handling and hygiene preferred
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Show courtesy, patience, and professionalism when interacting with patients and families.
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.
