Job Description:
Position Summary:
The Business Development Officer will be responsible for promoting economic empowerment and enterprise development by supporting small businesses, women entrepreneurs, and community-based enterprises. The BDO will identify market opportunities, support the development of viable business models, strengthen value chains, and facilitate access to financial services, markets, and business development support. The role will contribute to strengthening sustainable livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and income generation among vulnerable communities, particularly women and youth.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Enterprise Development and Entrepreneurship Support
- Identify potential entrepreneurs and support the establishment of small and micro enterprises.
- Provide guidance to entrepreneurs in business planning, business registration, and enterprise development.
- Support the development of women-led enterprises and community-based businesses.
2. Market Linkages and Value Chain Development
- Conduct market assessments and value chain analysis to identify viable economic opportunities.
- Establish linkages between producers, entrepreneurs, and local and regional markets.
- Facilitate partnerships with buyers, traders, cooperatives, and private sector actors.
3. Business Skills Development and Training
- Organize training programs on:
- Business planning and management
- Financial literacy and budgeting
- Marketing and product development
- Entrepreneurship and innovation
- Develop practical training materials for small entrepreneurs and community enterprises.
4. Financial Access and Enterprise Support
- Support entrepreneurs in accessing microfinance services, savings groups, and credit facilities.
- Facilitate access to seed grants, revolving funds, or small business investment opportunities.
- Provide guidance on financial record keeping and business sustainability.
5. Business Incubation and Mentoring
- Provide ongoing mentoring and coaching to entrepreneurs and business groups.
- Support incubation of new enterprises through technical guidance and problem-solving.
- Monitor business performance and provide recommendations to improve profitability.
6. Product Development and Innovation
- Support entrepreneurs in improving product quality, packaging, branding, and market competitiveness.
- Promote value addition in local products such as handicrafts, livestock products, food processing, and agriculture-based enterprises.
- Encourage climate-smart and environmentally sustainable business practices.
7. Coordination with Stakeholders
- Coordinate with financial institutions, government departments, private sector actors, and development partners.
- Facilitate partnerships that support business development and market access.
- Represent the project in relevant business development forums and meetings.
8. Monitoring, Reporting, and Documentation
- Track progress of supported businesses and enterprise development activities.
- Maintain records of entrepreneurs, training activities, and market linkages established.
- Prepare monthly progress reports and success stories highlighting business growth and impact.
Reporting Line:
The Business Development Officer will report to the Program Manager / Project Manager – Economic Empowerment Program.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Development Studies, or related field.
- Minimum 3–4 years of experience in business development, enterprise support, or livelihood programs.
- Experience working with small businesses, women entrepreneurs, and community enterprises.
- Understanding of market systems development and value chain development.
