Job Overview

The Mobility Assistant is responsible for training and assisting visually impaired individuals in developing the skills necessary to navigate their environment safely, efficiently, and independently. You will work closely with students to build their confidence in "Orientation and Mobility" (O&M), ensuring they can move through the campus and community with minimal risk.

Responsibilities

• Teach students how to use their remaining senses (hearing, touch, smell) to determine their position and relationship to objects in their environment.

• Provide hands-on training in the proper use of the long white cane for obstacle detection and surface changes.

• Evaluate the campus and surrounding areas for potential hazards and suggest modifications to improve accessibility 

• Help students memorize specific routes within the facility, such as the path from the entrance to classrooms, restrooms, and common areas.

• Act as a human guide when necessary, using professional "Sighted Guide" techniques to ensure the safety of the individual during complex transitions.

• Assist classroom teachers in modifying the physical layout of learning spaces to accommodate the mobility needs of visually impaired students.

• Maintain detailed logs of each student’s mobility milestones and areas requiring further practice.

Requirements

• Education: Minimum Intermediate (F.A / F.Sc).

• At least 02 years of teaching or assistant experience specifically within a school or center for the visually impaired.

• Familiarity with the Orientation and Mobility framework and basic Braille

• Age Limit: 18 – 30 years.

• Extreme attention to detail regarding the physical environment to prevent trips, falls, or collisions.

• Ability to give clear, concise, and calm verbal directions

• The ability to build a student's confidence through repetitive practice and positive reinforcement.

• Comfort with being on your feet and walking for extended periods throughout the day.
