TERMS OF REFERENCE (ToRs)

Consultant for Trainings on Composting, Kitchen Gardening, Efficient Use of Water/Natural Resources, and Nature & Species Protection

1. Introduction/Background

Pak Mission Society (PMS), with support from Kinder Missions Werk (KMW), is implementing the project “Empowering Children As Climate Leaders Through Climate Education” in selected government schools of Lower Kohistan and Kolai Palas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project aims to strengthen children’s understanding of climate and environmental risks and promote practical, school- and community-based actions that contribute to environmental protection and climate resilience.

As part of this effort, PMS intends to engage a qualified consultant to design and facilitate practical, age-appropriate training sessions for students and teachers/Green Clubs. The trainings will focus on composting, kitchen gardening, efficient use of water and other natural resources, and practical measures for protecting nature, biodiversity and local species. The assignment is expected to combine classroom learning with demonstrations and hands-on activities so that participants can apply the learning within schools and households.

2. Objectives

• Build practical knowledge and skills among students and teachers on environmentally sustainable practices.
• Introduce simple and locally appropriate composting methods for converting organic waste into useful compost.
• Promote kitchen gardening using available space, locally suitable plants, water-efficient practices and organic inputs.
• Improve understanding and practical application of efficient use, conservation and responsible management of water and other natural resources.
• Increase awareness of local biodiversity, nature protection and the importance of safeguarding plants, animals and other species.
• Equip Green Clubs and teachers with practical tools and action ideas that can be replicated at school and household level.
• Encourage participants to develop and implement simple school-based environmental actions following the training.

3. Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

A. Preparation and Training Design

Review the project objectives and training requirements; prepare a practical training plan, session outlines, presentations/visual aids, handouts and activity materials; adapt content to the local school context and participants’ age/learning level.

B. Composting

Explain the concept and benefits of composting; demonstrate suitable low-cost composting methods; explain suitable organic materials, layering/moisture/aeration, basic management and safe use of compost; conduct a practical demonstration where feasible.

C. Kitchen Gardening

Introduce the benefits of kitchen gardening; guide participants on site selection, basic soil preparation, seed/plant selection, nursery/planting, organic compost use, seasonal care, pest management and harvesting; emphasize low-cost and water-efficient approaches.

D. Efficient Use of Water and Natural Resources

Train participants on water conservation, efficient watering, prevention of wastage, reuse of suitable household/school water where safe and appropriate, soil moisture conservation, and responsible use of natural resources such as soil, vegetation and organic materials.

E. Nature and Species Protection

Build awareness of local ecosystems and biodiversity; explain threats to plants, animals and habitats; promote practical measures for protection of local species, avoidance of unnecessary disturbance/destruction of habitats, responsible waste management and school-level nature protection activities.

F. Hands-on Activities and Action Planning

Facilitate demonstrations, group work, quizzes, practical exercises and school-level action planning; support Green Clubs and teachers to identify realistic follow-up actions.

G. Documentation

Maintain attendance and training records, collect participant feedback/pre/post assessment where applicable, document practical demonstrations and submit a concise training report with recommendations and evidence.

6. Methodology

• Training will be conducted in the selected Government Schools as annexure “A”
• The consultant will use participatory, practical and learner centered methods rather than lecture only delivery.
• Training content should be simple, locally relevant and suitable for the participating students and teachers.
• Use demonstrations, evidence-based example and practical demonstrations for the better understanding of the students, visual materials, group discussions, role play, practical exercises, quizzes and question-and answer sessions as appropriate.
• Where feasible, use locally available/recycled materials for composting and gardening demonstrations.
• Promote gender-inclusive participation and ensure activities are safe, child-friendly and culturally appropriate.
• Use pre/post knowledge checks or another simple assessment approach to measure learning.
• Conclude each training with practical commitments or action points for Green Clubs, teachers and students.

7. Selection Criteria

• Individual consultant or consulting firm with relevant education in climate change, environmental sciences or equivalent.
• Individual consultant or consulting firm legally eligible to provide professional training/consultancy services in Pakistan.
• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in composting, kitchen gardening, nature, biodiversity and species protection, water and natural resources
• Demonstrated experience in designing and facilitating training for students, teachers, communities, schools or similar groups. (preference will be given to university lecturers of climate and environmental department).
• Strong understanding of participatory training and practical demonstration approaches.
• Ability to work in field/school settings and travel to the project locations as required.
• Fluency in Pashto and Urdu; knowledge of local languages (Kohistani) of the target area will be Preferred.

The technical proposal should include:

• Understanding of the assignment and proposed approach.
• Detailed methodology and training approach.
• Proposed work plan and timeframe.
• Relevant experience and examples of similar assignments.
• CV(s) of the proposed consultant(s)/trainer(s).
• Sample training material/module or outline, if available.

11. Financial Proposal

The financial proposal should provide a clear and itemized cost for the complete assignment, including professional fees and any applicable costs. Any applicable taxes should be clearly identified. The consultant should clearly state the proposed daily rate and/or lump-sum professional fee and the assumptions used.

12. Payment Terms

Payment will be made against satisfactory completion and acceptance of agreed deliverables, subject to PMS procedures and the terms of the contract. The final payment will be linked to submission and approval of the final training report and required supporting documentation. Applicable statutory deductions/taxes will be made as required.
