REPORTING TO: Director of Operations & Country Director

OVERSEES: All aspects of program and delivery in Skardu including Instructor Trainees, staff and program participants

POSITION INTRODUCTION  

This is a senior position for an experienced manager with a background in education and training. The Program Manager will be responsible for overall implementation of Ascend’s program in Gilgit-Baltistan. She will report to the Country Director (in Islamabad). This role requires a deep connection to the community in Skardu, and top communication skills. Key responsibilities include managing personnel, finance, operations of the building and maintenance of Ascend assets, and leading portions of technical delivery (Service and Mental Health pillars).  Additional managerial and operational duties will be assigned as needed by the Country Director.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Oversee the day to day operations of Ascend’s Gilgit-Baltistan program, staff and participants; 
  • Oversee delivery of the Ascend program curriculum – including: rock climbing, mountain navigation, hiking, group management training, expedition planning, emergency procedure training and weather forecasting and well as leadership, service, physical fitness, and wellness topics;
  • Identify, recruit, and vet potential program participants and ensure their standing and safety while enrolled in the program;
  • Communicate and problem solve with participants and their families to address concerns and issues related to the program;
  • Identify, recruit and vet community members and organizations to help deliver aspects of the program where external expertise is needed;
  • Identify, contract and manage with service providers for day to day operations (transport, security, etc)
  • Identify and communicate to Country Director the needs of the program including funding, volunteers, transportation, etc.; 
  • Provide regular photos and written reports to Country Director and HQ;
  • Deliver technical capacity building to national staff as it relates to programming;
  • Oversee all other program related staff, volunteers, and functions; 
  • Create, collect and report on measurable program outcomes;
  • Help Country Director coordinate visits of expatriate volunteers;
  • Manage, track and control day to day expenses and invoices and manage expenses to the budget, and send financial reports to Country Director;
  • Must be available to meet with HQ staff virtually on an ad hoc basis;
  • Able to travel outside Skardu as required;
  • Represent Ascend as directed;
  • Support Ascend’s policies, mission and core values;
  • Other duties as assigned by the County Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-15 years’ experience working in education, training, or management; 
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree;
  • Experience managing others, preferably girls, as well as experience managing multiple schedules and personalities on an ongoing basis;
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work independently;
  • Highly competent in written and verbal communication, including English;
  • Basic understanding of budgets and financial statements;
  • Ability to work independently within guidelines and ask for direction when new situations arise;
  • Experience in the non-profit sector and outdoor education preferred;
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Ascend and the young women with whom we work.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

This is a full time position working from the main office in Skardu, requiring approximately 40 hours per week. Compensation commensurate with experience. Additional compensation includes transportation, paid national holidays, paid-time off/sick/personal leave. The Program Manager is an independent contractor and not an Ascend employee.
