 1.    Background

Tearfund is a UK Based charity operating in Pakistan from the last 25 years. Tearfund works with Government, local civil society partners and corporates to find and co-design community based sustainable solutions. Facilitating local economic development, social enterprising and reducing environmental impacts.

“Turning plastic and other waste into green products to improve the environment and provide poor people of Sindh improved health and livelihoods” A UKAID match funding project presented, appreciated and recognised in the British parliament. The project was designed specifically for Karachi considering the challenges and need for cost-effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly solid waste management solution, contributing in reduction of plastic ending up in the ocean.

The project aims at developing a holistic, sustainable and cost-effective solid waste management model which is replicable in the rest of Sindh. Tearfund Pakistan is implementing the project in four UCs of two districts i.e. Kemari and Malir of Karachi.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is signed with Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) to facilitate waste collection, provision of land for establishing (Haryali Hubs) waste processing and recycling facilities and handing over the Haryali Hubs to ensure its operations beyond project period. The awareness is raised in the target communities resulting in a change in the behaviours around solid waste management at household level and community level. Two “Haryali Hubs” are established, one in each district. Haryali Hub is a waste processing facility where the household waste from targeted communities is collected, segregated and then kitchen waste recycled into organic compost and plastics are converted into pellets, flakes and other materials.
