1. Introduction
The Legal Aid Society is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization, working to serve marginalized and underprivileged communities to reduce challenges in accessing justice since 2013. The Legal Aid Society has a mission to connect vulnerable and disempowered end users of justice with effective and expedient services for the delivery of justice. LAS starts by listening to the voices of the vulnerable and disempowered within the legal system and combines their needs with the values of equity, fairness, and inclusion to change the way in which we view and tackle present day challenges facing the attainment of justice in our society.
2. Overview of the consultancy
In Pakistan, women’s access to property is hampered by a complex – sometimes contradictory – legal framework that is inaccessible to the average citizen, patriarchal values that lead to inequitable results, and a lack of implementation of laws that benefit women. Access to property is a key factor in opening the space for women’s decision-making power in the household and for allowing them the freedom to leave toxic home environments and to build wealth and autonomy. It is therefore necessary to understand the legal regime, support the implementation of state-backed initiatives to implement the law, and to work with women in vulnerable communities to raise their awareness of the ways in which the law can be utilized to their benefit. Legal Aid Society is running a project on Women’s Right to Legal property in 3 cities of Sindh: Karachi, Larkana and Shaheed Benazirabad to challenge these issues.
